Adoption

Our policy is to keep the surrendered "larger" parrots for a minimum of three months in order to watch for health and personality issues. The friendly and more socialized birds will be put up for adoption. Applications need to be filled out for all our birds. We require prior experience with the larger species. Adopters must live in a home rather than an apartment or condo. We prefer individuals with no small children and no pets that might endanger the welfare of a parrot. We will also want to inspect your home to insure the living conditions are acceptable.

Is there a cost to adopt

Picture
Yes, price does vary from species to species. Adoption fee's help maintain and care for our birds. Fees also help ensure that each bird receives a vet visit before being adopted.

Can I adopt right away?

Picture
For our smaller species yes. Our larger birds require a  number of visitation hours, to ensure that the bird is right for the people and home, larger birds must visit with all members of the household before adoption.

Do I need a permit?

Picture
In the state of Maine any bird endangered in the wild requires a permit to own. As part of the adoption process simply apply to the state for a permit.
Most parrots are surrendered, sold or rehomed at least 5 times in their life time.

The smaller birds, such as Finches, Parakeets, Lovebirds and Cockatiels, are easier to adopt. They make great pets for beginners and retirees.
